Welcome to Soak Soapworks!

I started soaping as a hobby. It started out as a creative and intellectual outlet, and evolved into what you see here.

My background is as a cancer biologist/researcher, and once I looked into the making of soap, I was surprised and pleased to find that I could couple my enjoyment of experimentation and research with such a beautiful, creative, and functional outlet. To make soap, the basics are fat and lye. While using any fat would work to make a soap, there is more to it than just throwing a random fat into your ‘saponification’ (soap making) reaction. It was gratifying to find how the nuances of different oils (fatty acids) changed the properties of soap.

In the beginning, I was happy just to share my soaps and products with friends and family. However, despite giving a lot away as gifts, I quickly started accumulating more soap than my husband was pleased with having spread throughout the house. Over time, and with practice, I started getting requests for specialty soaps and people interested in purchasing my soap. After multiple requests of, “do you have a website?” and, “what else do you have/make?” I decided that it was time to set this site up!

I would like to thank you for visiting, and a big thank you for those of you who have encouraged me to make a leap and put my soaps (and myself) out there. I hope that you enjoy my soaps. I am always looking for new techniques and ways to improve my soaps, and hope to be able to share my journey with you. Follow me on facebook, twitter, and instagram!
